Generation

- Guidelines for System Operators on the data required for life management of generators and a Survey of the experience with Operational Monitoring of air-cooled Hydro-generators. This work has provided very useful guidance to the electric power industry in respect of economy and reliability.

- System and Generation interaction: technical and economic implications of requirements at the interface. This timely Report effectively addressed the concerns of the industry as the unbundling of generation and transmission became more prevalent. Cigre has contributed to develop the concept of interface between the generating plants as an exchange of service, useful as an aid for decision making.

Power Transformers

- Fundamental work leading to the evaluation of reliable dielectric performance of large HV transformers. This work was of major influence on the elaboration of the related IEC Standard for dielectric test including Partial Discharge measurements in power transformers.

- The Cigre recommendation for adequate design and testing for power transformers subjected to fast transients has contributed to increase reliability and network availability.

Switching Equipment

- The Application Guide on Arc physics in Circuit-Breakers has greatly enhanced the understanding of circuit-breakers performance and capabilities and reduced costly developmental testing requirements.

- International Surveys on the reliability of Circuit-Breakers, the results of which have influenced circuit-breaker design, testing and maintenance practices as well as power system reliability planning.

HVDC

- Essential contribution to the transition from mercury valve to solid state valve technology. This work led eventually to the firm establishment of the HVDC technology .

- Cigre has produced important expertise on the subject of interaction between the DC-link and the AC-system, and issued Guidelines to Utility Planners which were very useful to those with little HVDC experience.

Power Cables

- A series of Cigre Publications has defined the technical basis for international standards regarding cable technology. In the field of submarine AC and DC cables, Cigre Publications are widely used as international reference documents for technical project specifications.

- Publications on environmental issues related to cable technology:

Electromagnetic Fields generated by cable systems, Applicability of Life Cycle Analysis methods, Prevention of terminate attack on HV Power Cables. This work has effectively increased knowledge in the engineering community at large.

Overhead Lines

- Environmental impact of overhead lines : Cigre has monitored and reported on the development and identified issues concerning regulatory controls and environmental concern internationally.

- Improvement of design criteria based on reliability concepts. This work has subsequently led to an IEC publication.

Substations

- Cigre has issued several publications on the subject of short-circuit currents in Substations. These publications are used world-wide as guidelines for short circuit testing, and substation updating.

With the development of digital techniques, v has investigated the subject and issued a much appreciated publication on the design and Maintenance practice for substation secondary systems.

Materials for Electrotechnology

- Cigre pioneered the use of gas-in-oil and the use of gas rations as a diagnostic tool in insulating system. Guidelines prepared by Cigre are now widely adopted by many professional societies world-wide.

- Capacitors: PCBs were replaced by a succession of highly-gas-absorbing liquids. Cigre was at the forefront of these changes, helping the industry understand their fundamental and practical significance.
